The Peruvian Andes. The seven colours of the rainbow on a mountain. The greatest empire of pre-Columbian America. The highest navigable lake in the world and a magic island where the Sun and its most faithful disciples inhabit. A city scattered on the high mountain slopes. A witchcraft market. Trees made of stone, houses made of salt and the wonders of a white ground and blue sky, as far as the eye can reach. A train cemetery. The world’s driest desert. The altitude. Lagoons of different colours, shapes and sizes, all of them beautiful. Trekking on canyons and geysers by sunrise on the top of a mountain. Flamingos, llamas, mountains, volcanoes and again the desert. And so many other things!
This journey in Bolivia, Chile and Peru unveils some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the planet, which will provide you with photos that will make your friends back home jealous!
- See geysers and flamingos in the world’s driest place, the Atacama Desert, in Chile
- Dazzle yourself with surreal lagoons and salt flats of Uyuni, in Bolivia
- Visit the world’s highest capital (at 3660 meters above sea level): La Paz, in Bolivia
- Navigate South America’s largest lake and one of the highest in the world, Lake Titicaca, in Bolivia
- Challenge the altitude and trek the Rainbow Mountain (5200 meters), in Peru
Day 1 - Arrival to Cusco, Perusee
Bienvenidos a Cusco!
The ancient capital of the Inca empire and known as the “navel of the world”, the city of Cusco possesses a prosper Andean culture, Inca architecture and colonial treasures in abundance!
Patricia will be waiting for you at the airport.
Day 2 - Cusco, Perusee
On this first day, we will have a cultural immersion through the streets of Cusco. We will get lost through the Inca paths in the city centre. We will discover great gold pieces from a period prior to the Inca civilization in the Pre-Columbian Museum. We will observe the city at one of its most beautiful view point and we will watch one of the most enchanting and traditional spectacles of the Andean culture.
This is the beginning of a great adventure!
Day 3 - Rainbow Mountain - Winikunka, Perusee
After these first days of acclimatization in Cusco, it's time to go into the adventure on a wonderful trek through the mountain of Winikunka, the famous rainbow mountain. We will walk for about 2 hours, to reach the highest point at 5200 meters. Here you will see a delightful carpet of natural colours. How is it possible? Different minerals paint the mountains of beautiful colours range.
Once we return to Cusco at the end of the day prepare your suitcase because we will travel to Puno.
Accommodation: bus, hotel
Meals: breakfast and lunch
Day 4 - Puno, Perusee
We will arrive early in Puno. Rest and recover your energy for the next adventures. We are located in the largest body of water at high altitude in the world: the Titicaca lake, with an area of over 8300 square meters and at 3800 meters above sea level.
By the end of the morning we will discover a less visited part of Taquille island and we will eat a tasty trout plate.
Coming back to Puno we will say goodbye to Peru at Plaza de Armas.
Meals: breakfast and lunch
Day 5 - Isla del Sol, Boliviasee
We will cross the border and we will arrive again at the Titicaca Lake. At the end of the morning we will arrive at Copacabana, where we will take a boat to Isla del Sol.
Then, we will walk through the Sun Gate and we will stay at Yumani Community. This a magical place distant from all kind of typical sounds of Latin America. There are no cars and the internet signal is very weak. Take this change to rest and appreciate this magical place!
Day 6 - Isla del Sol, Boliviasee
In this natural paradise, there is evidence of people living in the island about 5000 years ago and the Incas believed that the Sun God (Inti) was born here. After all this time, the island still keeps its aura of mysticism, peace and beauty, as life has a slow pace, which invites you to forget time and celebrate life. And if you thought that one sunset in Titicaca would be something to remember already, wait until you see the sunrise on this side!
Today we will walk around the island and we come back at the end of the day to appreciate the magic sunset!
Day 7 - La Paz, Boliviasee
We will say goodbye to the magical island of the Sun God on a boat that will take us to the "reality". Back in Copacabana we will travel to La Paz, Bolivia’s capital located 3660 meters above sea level and surrounded by mountains. We will have time during the afternoon to explore the city: walk around to feel the chaotic atmosphere of this latin capital.
Day 8 – La Paz, Boliviasee
We are in the middle of your trip so take the day off!
My suggestion is the discovery of one of the oldest, most important and surprising pre-Inca civilizations on record: Tiwanaku. Or why not go on a crazy and fantastic adventure into the fascinating and dreaded Death Road? A 3 hours drive away from La Paz you can do downhill on the Death Road.
Day 9 - La Paz, Boliviasee
We will have all day to explore the charms of this enormous capital: its markets, churches, museums, smells and flavours. One of our stops is the curious witches market, a market mostly visited by local wizards and healers (whom they call “kallavayami”), but also visited by curious tourists looking for love potions, lucky charms against bad spirits and even baby llama foetuses.
In the evening, it's time to leave the capital and head to Uyuni.
Accommodation: sleeper bus
Day 10 - Uyuni Desert, Boliviasee
We arrive at the most awaited day of our trip, where we cover the Uyuni Salt Desert! If it rains this will be a surreal and endless mirror and the right place for those weird and fun photos. We will also visit Isla del Pescado, located in the middle of the salt flats, the salt mines and a salt hotel which is a museum. We also stop at a fabulous train cemetery where old trains, which used to make the important connection between Bolivia and the rest of the continent, now rest in peace.
In the evening, we will still visit the caves of Las Galaxias and watch a dazzling starry sky.
Accommodation: salt hotel
Meals: lunch and dinner
Day 11 - Altiplano, Boliviasee
The journey continues. Another wonder awaits us on the Altiplano! We will cross an army of rocks, the Ollagué Volcano, the wonderful stone tree, as well as other rock formations and Altiplanic Lagoons: Hedionda, Honda, Cañapa and Chiarcota. We will pass the Siloli Desert, observe the pink flamingos and the photogenic Lagoa Colorada. A full day!
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 12 - Altiplano, from Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama, Chilesee
We wake up early, in time to witness the sunrise in this region of southwest Bolivia, heading towards Chile, passing by the geysers "Sol de la Mañana", the Polques Thermal Baths (where there will be time for a bath!), Salvador Dali’s desert and the White and Green Lagoons.
After the border procedures, we continue our journey by bus to San Pedro de Atacama. Take the afternoon to walk around the picturesque desert capital, located at an altitude of 2400 meters, is a different place from all the places we have visited.
Day 13 - San Pedro de Atacama, Chilesee
We start this day with a tour to Piedras Rojas salt flats and Lagunas Altiplanicas, located in the gorgeous National Reserve Los Flamencos, one of the places less explored up until recently, which encloses enigmatic reddish rock formations, flamingos, beautiful lagoons and breathtaking landscapes.
We come back during the afternoon and you will have time to rest and visit the handicraft markets.
Meals: breakfast and lunch
Day 14 - San Pedro de Atacama, Chilesee
The day starts earlier than usual: we wake up long before sunrise and travel to a geothermal field where we can witness amazing geysers at the time they are most active – sunrise! Prepare for subzero temperatures on the top, but nothing that a hot thermal bath (heated by the active volcano) won’t make you forget about. It will make you warmer!
The afternoon is free! What about another adventure in the Atacama Desert: a tour to the Cejar lagoon, where you’ll be able to experiment bathing in a salty lake. We challenge you to touch the bottom of it! Or take the afternoon to trek to the Moon (Luna) and Death (Muerte) Valleys, between canyons filled with salt crystals, ending with a marvellous sunset in the desert!
But be prepared, at the end of the afternoon we will head off to Calama airport to continue to our last stop: Santiago de Chile.
Day 15 - Return from Santiago de Chile, Chilesee
Depending on your flight schedules, Patricia will arrange your transport to Santiago de Chile airport where we say goodbye from our adventure in the heights. Once at home, it’s guaranteed that your camera’s memory cards will be filled with amazing photos.
Have a nice flight home and happy travels!
