The Peruvian Andes. The seven colours of the rainbow on a mountain. The greatest empire of pre-Columbian America. The highest navigable lake in the world and a magic island where the Sun and its most faithful disciples inhabit. A city scattered on the steep mountain slopes. A witchcraft market. Trees made of stone, houses built of salt and the wonders of white ground and blue sky, as far as the eye can reach. A train cemetery. The world’s driest desert. The altitude. Lagoons of different colours, shapes and sizes, all of them beautiful. Trekking on canyons and geysers by sunrise on the top of a mountain. Flamingos, llamas, mountains, volcanoes and again the desert. Also, so many other things!
This tour through Bolivia, Chile and Peru unveils some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the planet, which will provide you with photos that will make your friends back home jealous!
Bienvenidos a Cusco!
The ancient capital of the Inca empire and known as the “navel of the world”, the city of Cusco possesses a prosper Andean culture, Inca architecture and colonial treasures in abundance!
Patricia will be waiting for you at the airport.
On this first day, we will have a cultural immersion through the streets of Cusco accompanied by a local guide. From the Plaza de Armas where Pachacutec marks the centre of attention, traversing the ancient Inca ways until we find one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the city.
After lunch, you can rest or explore the city freely.
After these first days of acclimatisation in Cusco, it’s time to go into the adventure on a beautiful trek through the mountain of Winikunka, the famous rainbow mountain. We will walk for about 2 hours, to reach the highest point at 5200 meters. Here you will see a delightful carpet of natural colours. How is it possible? Different minerals paint the mountains in beautiful colours range.
If, however, altitude adaptation is difficult for you, there is another trekking option to the Humantay Lagoon, at 4000 meters of altitude. Here you can observe the snowy mountains of Salkantay and Humantanay.
We’ll arrive in Cusco in the afternoon and we’ll take some rest.
Meals: breakfast and lunch
The day is free today! Please take the opportunity to explore the city of Cusco, visit the archaeological park of Machu Picchu (contact us in advance), discover some of the natural treasures of the Sacred Valley or adventure yourself for another trek. New experiences in this region are more than many and sure to surprise you.
In the evening, we will head south on an overnight bus trip.
Accommodation: night bus
We arrive in Puno at dawn, and after a short rest, we leave again. We cross the frontier and head for the majestic Titicaca Lake entering, at mid-morning, to Copacabana where we embark on a small boat for the magic Isla del Sol.
We climb the Puerta del Sol and stay in the Yumani Community. José will welcome you with a typical dish of the region, and soon you will have time to rest with your eyes on Titicaca Lake. This island is a magical place, far from the typical noises of Latin America. There are no cars, and the internet is very slow. Get the hang of the modern world these days!
In this natural paradise vestiges of inhabitants have been discovered for about 5000 years and the Incas believed that the Sun God (Inti) had been born here. After all this time the island still preserves its aura of mysticism, peace and beauty, in a slow pace of life, which invites us to forget time and celebrate life. Moreover, if you thought that sunset in Titicaca would be memorable, wait and see the sunrise on this side!
We travel all the island and return to the starting point at the end of the day to rest on a terrace watching the magical sunset!
We depart from the magical island of the Sun God on a boat that takes us back to “reality.” Once again in Copacabana, we travel to La Paz, the capital of Bolivia located at 3660 meters of altitude and surrounded by mountains.
In the afternoon, dive in its culture, taste some of its delicacies, walk the streets, squares, churches and markets.
We are halfway through the trip and so today is free!
One suggestion is the discovery of one of the oldest, most important and surprising pre-Inca civilisations of which there are records: Tiwanaku. Alternatively, why not venture into the fascinating and dreaded Death Road? About 3 hours drive from La Paz you can descend to Death Road on a mountain bike (downhill). Or, why not go beyond your limits and venture in a short walk to Mount Chacaltaya and the Valley of the Moon?
Today, we have all day to explore the charms of this enormous capital: its markets, churches, museums, smells and tastes. One of the stops is the curious witch market frequented by sorcerers and local healers (which they call “kallavayami”), although curious travellers also frequent it in search of love potions, amulets against evil spirits and even baby llamas!
In the evening, it’s time to leave the capital and head to Uyuni.
Accommodation: sleeper bus
We arrived at one of the most awaited moments of the trip! Let’s start our journey through southern Bolivia in a 4X4 jeep wandering through its surreal landscapes.
In the morning, after breakfast, we continue to the largest salt desert in the world, the Salar de Uyuni! If it has rained, this will be an endless mirror and the ideal place to take strange and fun pictures. We also visit Isla del Pescado, located in the middle of the salt flats. We stop at a fabulous train cemetery, where the trains that made the vital connection between Bolivia and the rest of the continent now rest.
At night, we rest in the silence of the desert.
Accommodation: salt hotel (shared WC)
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
The journey continues. Another trip, another wonder awaits us on the Altiplano! We cross an army of rocks, the Ollagué Volcano, the magnificent stone tree, other rock formations and the Altiplanic Lagoons: Hedionda, Honda, Cañapa and Chiarcota. We pass the Siloli Desert, observe the pink flamingos and the photogenic Lagoa Colorada. We still have time to see the “Sol de la Mañana” geysers and finish the day at the Polques Thermal Baths. A full day and probably one of the most amazing days of the whole trip.
After dinner, why not see the stars inside the hot springs?
Accommodation: hotel (no shower, shared WC)
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
We woke up early, heading for Chile, passing through the Salvador Dali desert and finally the White and Green Lagoons.
After the stop at the border, we continue by bus to San Pedro de Atacama, beginning our descent. We take advantage of the afternoon to wander the picturesque desert capital that, located at an altitude of 2400 meters, is a place different from all that we visited so far.
After a short rest, we will visit the archaeological park of the village of Tulor, taking an immersion in the Lickan Antay culture, and finally interpreting the Andean constellations in one of the most beautiful skies in the world!
Meals: breakfast and snack
We start this day with a trip to the Laguna Chaxa and the National Reserve of the Flamingos learning with atacamenhos some legends of nature as well as the life in detail of the Andean flamingos. Then we visit the town of Taconao and an organic farm through the experience of the Patricio. In the afternoon, after a buffet lunch in nature, we continue to the Cejar Lagoon. However, it will be in a private lagoon that we will float in the saline waters. A unique experience where Carlos will explain other stories. The day ends with an enigmatic sunset on the shores of Tebenquiche Lagoon.
Meals: breakfast, lunch and snack
Unfortunately, our trip is almost over. Enjoy this day for another adventure through the Atacama Desert, buy your last memories or enjoy the atmosphere of San Pedro de Atacama.
At the end of the afternoon, we continue to the airport of Calama, beginning our return home. We leave the Altiplano and immerse ourselves in the hustle and bustle of the city of Santiago de Chile.
Depending on your flight schedules, Patricia will arrange your transport to Santiago do Chile airport where we say goodbye from our adventure in the heights. Once at home, it’s guaranteed that your camera’s memory cards will be filled with amazing photos.
Have a nice flight home and happy travels!
